Pontoon boat on a West Virginia mountain lake with steep wooded slopes

Where boats move in West Virginia

Summersville Lake is the state's showpiece — deep, clear, and busy with runabouts, wakeboats and houseboats out of the marinas on its north end. Cheat Lake near Morgantown, Stonewall Jackson, Bluestone and Tygart run smaller fleets with the same profile. The Ohio River side, from Wheeling down through Parkersburg and Huntington, has a mix of cruisers and pontoons and much better road access.

Access is the whole conversation here. Marina roads drop off state routes onto grades and switchbacks that a full tractor-trailer cannot negotiate loaded, and several launch areas have one gravel lot with no room to turn. Carriers handle mountain work with shorter rigs or by shuttling from a staging point, and the honest version of that plan belongs in the quote.

Season is Memorial Day to Labor Day in practice, with a shoulder either side. Marinas here store on land almost universally, so haul-out isn't the bottleneck it is on the coast.

Powerboats and cruisers

Center consoles, sportfish and cabin cruisers. Under 8’6” of beam it travels on ordinary plates; over that we pull the permits and plan the route around the bridges.

Sailboats

Mast unstepped at the yard, keel cradled, air draft planned before the truck books. Tell us your rigger’s date and we schedule around it.

Small craft and PWC

Jet skis, skiffs, tenders and anything already on its own trailer. The quickest to schedule and the cheapest per mile.

Moving in or out of West Virginia

Most long runs are outbound to salt water: east on I-64 and I-81 to the Chesapeake, or south on I-77 toward the Carolinas and the Gulf. Trailerable boats leave for coastal weeks and come back, and that round trip is the most common booking we see in this state.

For anything wide, expect a weekday daylight schedule and a route built around grades rather than mileage. I-77 through the Bluefield area and I-68 east of Morgantown are both long climbs.

Where a hull is not worth the cost of the haul, donate your boat is a cleaner exit than trucking it somewhere to sit again.

When trucking is not worth it

Boats coming out of long storage are the ones worth pricing carefully. If a hull has sat for six seasons and the quote to move it is climbing past what it would sell for, donating the boat is a cleaner exit than trucking it somewhere to sit again.
