Where boats move in Pennsylvania
Presque Isle Bay at Erie is the state's one big-water harbor — deep, protected, and served by yards that handle 40-foot cruisers without ceremony. Access from I-90 and Route 5 is simple. At the other end, Pittsburgh's three rivers hold a large and often overlooked fleet, with marinas from Aliquippa down through the Monongahela and up the Allegheny, most of them reachable off I-79 and Route 28.
The Poconos lakes — Wallenpaupack, Harmony, Nockamixon farther south — are trailer-boat country with narrow approach roads and seasonal cottage traffic. The Susquehanna corridor and the Delaware River yards around Bristol and Yardley round it out, and the Chesapeake is close enough that plenty of Pennsylvania boats are stored here and slipped in Maryland.
Route planning is the local wrinkle. The Pennsylvania Turnpike's mountain tunnels have height limits that rule out tall loads, and I-80 and I-76 both carry long grades. Carriers know the workarounds; it's why a cross-state Pennsylvania run can take longer than the mileage suggests.

The most common move isn't within the state at all — it's a Pennsylvania-owned boat going to or from a slip in New Jersey, Maryland or Delaware, usually in April and October. Those are short hauls and the cheapest work we do.
For longer trips, PennDOT issues per-trip oversize permits and its restrictions are the standard weekday-daylight pattern above 8'6" wide. Erie boats heading to the coast run east on I-80; Pittsburgh boats usually go south on I-79 and I-77 toward the Carolinas.
