Where boats move in New York
Long Island is the volume. The Great South Bay yards from Freeport to Patchogue, the Peconics out of Hampton Bays and Sag Harbor, and the Montauk fleet all move boats every spring and fall. The hard part is the road network, not the water: the Southern State, Northern State and Ocean Parkways are car-only, with clearances down near 7'7" in places, so every carrier runs Sunrise Highway, the LIE and Route 27 instead. A quote that assumes a parkway route is a quote from someone who hasn't hauled here.
Upstate is a separate business. Lake Champlain out of Plattsburgh and Willsboro, the Thousand Islands from Clayton to Alexandria Bay, Lake Ontario at Oswego and Sodus Bay, and the Finger Lakes yards all run a shorter season and ice out later. The Hudson corridor from Nyack up to Kingston and Catskill sits in the middle and is the easiest run in the state — I-87 and Route 9W get a truck within a mile of most yards.

Powerboats and cruisers
Center consoles, sportfish and cabin cruisers. Under 8’6” of beam it travels on ordinary plates; over that we pull the permits and plan the route around the bridges.

Small craft and PWC
Jet skis, skiffs, tenders and anything already on its own trailer. The quickest to schedule and the cheapest per mile.

The two common long runs are Long Island to Florida in October and Florida back in May, and Champlain or Ontario boats heading to the coast for a season. NYSDOT issues oversize permits by trip and by route, and the city crossings matter: the Verrazzano and the GWB take wide loads with a permit, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges do not. If your boat is over 12' of beam, expect the carrier to route around the five boroughs entirely.
Winter storage is the other reason boats move here. Inside storage upstate is cheaper than Long Island shrink-wrap, and a one-way haul in November often pays for itself by March.
Where a hull is not worth the cost of the haul, boat donation is a cleaner exit than trucking it somewhere to sit again.
When trucking is not worth it
Boats coming out of long storage are the ones worth pricing carefully. If a hull has sat for six seasons and the quote to move it is climbing past what it would sell for, donating the boat is a cleaner exit than trucking it somewhere to sit again.
